The changing of seasons from summer to fall is a wonderful time to visit the
Burden Center, a 440 acre oasis nestled in the center of Baton Rouge, at the intersection of Essen Lane and Interstate 10. Enjoy ornamental gardens of All-America Selections, over an acre of blooming roses, fragrant gingers and evergreen camellias. You will pass by vegetable and agronomic crops and a fruit orchard before reaching the historic Windrush Gardens and Rural Life Museum.
At one time the acreage was a working farm owned by the Burden family to be later donated to LSU and the LSU AgCenter for historical preservation and agricultural research. To commemorate the property’s history and to recognize the influence Steele Burden had on the LSU campus and the Baton Rouge community as a landscape designer and artist, the Burden Horticulture Society is sponsoring “A Brush With Burden” juried art exhibition.
All artists are invited to participate by submitting pieces that depict an area within the Burden properties including grounds, buildings, flora and fauna of the Rural Life Museum, Windrush Gardens and Burden Center. All art media are eligible.
Entries must be postmarked no later than November 30, 2011.
The exhibit will be held in the Steele Burden Memorial Orangerie at the Burden Center from
March 3-11, 2012. Winning works will be displayed at the Shaw Center for The Arts for a month following the show. For details visit the Burden Horticulture Society's
